Remarks on Imperforate Anus

Bombay Medical Service. I have read with interest the case of " imperforate anus" of a child four months old, published in the current issue of your journal by Surgeon-Major Ma the w, Civil Surgeon of Mozufferpore. It would seem that it is one of congenital malformation, that " this child is in capital condition, lively, and, as far as can be judged, in the enjoyment of perfect healththat " the rectum opens into the bladder, and the contents of the bowel are expelled through the urethra." This is the condition of his patient described by the writer, and to it he adds his expression of amazement, that ''it is certainly most strange and perplexing how a child can have lived for four months without evincing the faintest symptom of distress." " One would think that only the more fluid portion of the excreta could be passed with the urine, and that the more solid fajcal matter speedily giving rise to intestinal obstruction." " That such a condition will sooner or later occur is certain." Mr. Mathew observes, that " imperforate anus is not a very rare deformity, and numerous instances have been recorded where the condition has existed ; but the term imperforate anus has been applied, and I think inconsistently, to cases where no trace of anal aperture can be found between the organs of generation and the tip of the coccyx" 000 The italics are mine ; it seems to
